Great post, Sharon! We were lucky in that the hospital where we birthed didn't pressure us to bathe the baby. We wiped the residual goo out of his hair ourselves with a wet washcloth and once we got him home, we didn't give him a full-on bath until he was nearly a month old. He simply wasn't dirty! He was a little befuddled by his first bath, but did seem to enjoy the experience, and he has loved baths ever since. I bathe him about once a week now, and he completely enjoys it. There's no bathtime fussing, ever!

Funny how the natural process ends up being beneficial to the baby. It seems so obvious that so many things happen in the birth process for a reason (how do we get the medical community to realize this?). Gee, vernix is beneficial? Who'd a thunk it?

Very interesting post Sharon :) Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Sharon, remember too that the nurses at a hospital birth are judged by how well they complete the checklist in question. I get a fair amount of pushback for delaying baths (because recovery isn't complete until the bath is done) even at my hospital. One "out" is that if it's in the birth plan not to bathe the baby, I will not get flak for not doing so.

Good info! I always cringe at photos of newborns being bathed. I didn't bathe my babies until they were several weeks old, and now I am glad to find some validation for that never-thought-about-it choice that I made.
