I think once a baby is wiped off with the blankets right after birth, and a touch up with a warm washcloth and water only during a diaper change to remove any obvious chunks, no one will be able to tell the difference between a bathed baby and an unbathed baby. They look pretty identical. the vernix tends to be found in baby folds on the legs, under the arms, back of the neck etc, mostly hidden to start with!

Yes, it makes perfect sense to me that vernix has a purpose when it is naturally present. Regarding the checklist necessity of the first bath, I hope that having a "no thank you" clause in my birth plan will be a sufficient CYA for the nursing staff at my delivery. Now here's the dilemma, and I know you'll have an idea for this too: the visiting family (wanting to see Jr. soon after birth) will want to see a "clean" little guy. My husband is also concerned about this. I know it seems shallow and vain, but I also understand that not everyone is comfortable with vernix and other possible residual birth goo. What is your suggestion to balance these concerns?

Sorry we missed each other! I do feel like there were so many people I wanted to see who I barely laid eyes on, or didn't see at all. Maybe it was those long hallways. Maybe we'll meet next year!

I cry every time I think of this beautiful moment. I wonder why it dawn on me to sing while I was in labor, but I guess it's because I didn't think I had permission to do so. In the future, when I'm at a daughter's labor, I'm definitely going to sing to them! I can't wait!

What amazing videos!!!!! I can't believe the one with guitar. So cool.

Those of us who sing know that the reverse is also true:

I suspect that your exploding client probably always thought she would sing in labor too.

Ah, transition! Another animal indeed! Reality: transition is tough. Only way through it is through it! Head on! Staying in the moment, ctx by ctx, breath by breath! The good news about transition is that it is the shortest phase of labor! Women who are non-medicated and focused on going all the way without pain medication will often ask for meds at this point, but with support and surrender to the process, I frequently see that they stop asking and just move forward! It's hard, but you can do it! Using whatever works for that woman in the moment will be what she needs! Extreme inward focus? relying on others?, serious vocalization? Who knows! The magic is in the woman, her baby and her body working together! And it is always an honor to watch it happen!

Yes, I see, that's the thing to focus on: the proportion of discomfort to total labor time is small. And I do recall that relaxation is attainable between contractions depending on which stage of labor. The chart and proportions presented here are representing active labor. How does a woman find any way to relax during transition, or does she? And yes, I agree, women are strong!

Julie,

i don't think it is about lying down, or sleeping! I think it is an awareness that the pain of the ctx will come and go, and you will get a break and during that break youl allow yourself to relax and rest deeply as much as YOU can! This was just this woman's particular image that she used to get through labor! I like to think that the take away point, is that peak discomfort in total time will be small compared to the entire time of labor! Women are strong! So Strong!

I love this as a concept, but I'm challenged by how it actually works in practice. I understand that this particular woman was successful with it, so that bodes well for other laboring moms. The specific part that I'm having trouble with is how to lie down to take advantage of the non-peak minutes. The energetic move from laboring position (whatever that might be) to corpse pose is one thing. And then, how do you get to sleep so fast before the arrival of the next contraction? Perhaps I'm extrapolating "rest" into "sleep" mistakenly. Perhaps 45 minutes of intermittent rest is still of great value at this stage. I really would like to understand this so I might use it at my next birth.

Taken from THe Birth Survey press release: "The Birth Survey is an ongoing project. In the summer of 2009, free-text responses will be displayed on the website, and in 2010, detailed information on patients' experiences with prenatal, labor, birth and postpartum care will be added to the website as searchable custom reports."

I think this will be useful to see actual comments, recognizing that this is someone's opinion! But get enough opinions, and it starts to carry some weight.

In terms of Interventions, you can go here http://www.thebirthsurvey.com/dev/Results/learn_start.shtml to find state by state information, some which is readily available. Many hospitals do not release this information, but if you click on your state, you will find what info is available and where! And also, you can become a birth survey ambassador, and help them encourage hospitals to release this data and make it obtainable to the public! Transparency in Maternity Care! Sharon

Knowledge is power. Congrats to this couple for holding their ground! I'm really alarmed at how our traditional medical system keeps birthing mothers in the dark about some of the most important parts of the birthing process. Hooray for Sharon and her continuing efforts to turn on the bright lights! :)

Great post, Sharon! We were lucky in that the hospital where we birthed didn't pressure us to bathe the baby. We wiped the residual goo out of his hair ourselves with a wet washcloth and once we got him home, we didn't give him a full-on bath until he was nearly a month old. He simply wasn't dirty! He was a little befuddled by his first bath, but did seem to enjoy the experience, and he has loved baths ever since. I bathe him about once a week now, and he completely enjoys it. There's no bathtime fussing, ever!
