I love this as a concept, but I'm challenged by how it actually works in practice. I understand that this particular woman was successful with it, so that bodes well for other laboring moms. The specific part that I'm having trouble with is how to lie down to take advantage of the non-peak minutes. The energetic move from laboring position (whatever that might be) to corpse pose is one thing. And then, how do you get to sleep so fast before the arrival of the next contraction? Perhaps I'm extrapolating "rest" into "sleep" mistakenly. Perhaps 45 minutes of intermittent rest is still of great value at this stage. I really would like to understand this so I might use it at my next birth.

Taken from THe Birth Survey press release: "The Birth Survey is an ongoing project. In the summer of 2009, free-text responses will be displayed on the website, and in 2010, detailed information on patients' experiences with prenatal, labor, birth and postpartum care will be added to the website as searchable custom reports."

I think this will be useful to see actual comments, recognizing that this is someone's opinion! But get enough opinions, and it starts to carry some weight.

In terms of Interventions, you can go here http://www.thebirthsurvey.com/dev/Results/learn_start.shtml to find state by state information, some which is readily available. Many hospitals do not release this information, but if you click on your state, you will find what info is available and where! And also, you can become a birth survey ambassador, and help them encourage hospitals to release this data and make it obtainable to the public! Transparency in Maternity Care! Sharon

Knowledge is power. Congrats to this couple for holding their ground! I'm really alarmed at how our traditional medical system keeps birthing mothers in the dark about some of the most important parts of the birthing process. Hooray for Sharon and her continuing efforts to turn on the bright lights! :)

Great post, Sharon! We were lucky in that the hospital where we birthed didn't pressure us to bathe the baby. We wiped the residual goo out of his hair ourselves with a wet washcloth and once we got him home, we didn't give him a full-on bath until he was nearly a month old. He simply wasn't dirty! He was a little befuddled by his first bath, but did seem to enjoy the experience, and he has loved baths ever since. I bathe him about once a week now, and he completely enjoys it. There's no bathtime fussing, ever!

So excited to learn about this local milk bank! I ran into milk supply problems of my own when my son was barely three months old. With Sharon's help, we met several local moms who were overproducing, and they happily kept us supplied with extra milk. My little boy, almost one year old now, is happy and healthy and is still breastfeeding like nobody's business. Plus, we now have a great network of other local moms. Hooray for milk mamas! And a big thanks to Sharon!

Great empowering story.

I love it when couples take charge of their own birth and just say no to induction if there is no real medical need for it.

Funny how the natural process ends up being beneficial to the baby. It seems so obvious that so many things happen in the birth process for a reason (how do we get the medical community to realize this?). Gee, vernix is beneficial? Who'd a thunk it?

Very interesting post Sharon :) Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Sharon, remember too that the nurses at a hospital birth are judged by how well they complete the checklist in question. I get a fair amount of pushback for delaying baths (because recovery isn't complete until the bath is done) even at my hospital. One "out" is that if it's in the birth plan not to bathe the baby, I will not get flak for not doing so.

Good info! I always cringe at photos of newborns being bathed. I didn't bathe my babies until they were several weeks old, and now I am glad to find some validation for that never-thought-about-it choice that I made.

This happens too many times.! Thank goodness the couple had the self confidence and trusted their own instincts and their doula instead of taking the attitude that "DR always knows best". Hope to hear that they're holding their new baby very soon (if not already).

Thanks Sharon!
This is such a common situation. One resource I often refer to is "A Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth," Edited by Enkin, Keirse, Neilson, et al. It's from the folks who do the Cochran Database, and it's basically a literature review on all the major OB topics that are still at all controversial. Might be too medical lingo laden for some clients, but it helps me wrap my head around issues.
Thanks for writing this!

Hi Sharon,
Well written!! I am trying to find where I can order a free copy of the report as you mentioned. I can't find it,will send me the link? It could be that it is 3:30 am and I am in a steroid induced awake time or that I have chemo brain, or that I lack the computer skills to find it. Anyway you are the queen of resources, thanks.

Hi, Sharon--it was great to see you at the reunion! Your class was great, and you're right that while the knowledge you confidence you helped impart was important, the connections to the other couples has been so wonderful. Sarah

Although I was in a different class group, I can attest to the importance of "the village" and the support that each parent gives another as we enter the foreign land of parenthood for the first time. You're a wonderful teacher and a blessing of immeasurable magnitude during labor and birth. Thank you for all that you have taught me and for helping me claim my strength and use it for the best possible outcome.
